Entering the month of Ramadhan

We are about to enter the Holy Month of Ramadhan and as we count down the final days of the month of Sha’ban it is an opportune time for us to reflect on areas of spiritual improvement in preparation for the coming blessed month of fasting. The two months preceding Ramadhan are preparatory months allowing us the opportunity to maximally benefit from the spiritual feast of Ramadhan.

The month of Rajab is the month of ‘Takhalli’, which can be defined as the emptying of one’s heart completely from other than Allah (SWT) through fasting, abstaining from desires and seeking forgiveness. The month of Sha’ban is the month of ‘Tahalli’, which is the decorating of one’s heart through du’a and supplications. The Holy Month of Ramadhan is the month of ‘Tajalli’, where the heart finally manifests the word of Allah (SWT) by reciting the Qur’an.

The Qur’an was revealed to the heart of the Holy Messenger Muhammad (SAW) in accordance with his status as the best of all creation. This blessed event took place on the Night of Decree (Laylatal Qadr), which is known as the night of a thousand months. On that night, Allah (SWT) commanded him to “Read! In the name of the Lord that created all that exists” (96:1), which is said to be the first verse revealed of the Holy Qur’an.

Though none of us can expect that divine revelations such as the Holy Qur’an will be revealed to us this coming Laylatul Qadr, we all have the potential to at least read our own souls and steer back on to the path that Allah (SWT) wants us to tread. InshAllah, with sincere contemplation and du’a, we will be blessed with forgiveness and increased awareness of barriers that exist between our present state and the state that Allah (SWT) wants us to be in, and will be granted all that we need in order to overcome these barriers in the coming year.
